Rom. 13:8-14 - We know we have to love each other and to live a godly life in this world. Sometimes we have good intentions but produce no real fruit. The Scripture, the Holy Spirit, the Church and the reality of our future meeting with the Lord should prompt us to vigilance and good works.

Proverbs 1:1-7 - To become wise one should start with gaining the fear of God, which is the beginning of knowledge. Wisdom is not just making sensible decisions and having good advice. It is first about having a righteous life before God. Such a righteous life can only begin with recognizing God’s greatness and knowing Him (i.e. the fear of God).

Heb. 12:1-2 - We remain faithful to God and persevere in our faith through trials by fixing our eyes on Jesus and the heroes of faith who have gone before us. To remain faithful,
1. We should remember the example set by the heroes of faith,
2. We should throw off the sin that so easily entangles us, and
3. We should keep our eyes fixed on Christ.

Ps. 119:65-72 - God uses suffering to grow us in our sanctification. Without suffering we often wander, but suffering brings us back to the Word. God is faithful and kind, and that is why the suffering sent from God is good. In spite of the suffering, one should remain faithful and be comforted by His Word. Suffering teaches us the Word. The Word, to which we return through the suffering, is the dearest.

Scripture however, does not encourage the Christian to harbor a negative approach to the authorities. The Bible teaches that the authorities that exist have been instituted by God. Therefore, we have to learn to see our authorities’ activities as a means by which God care for us. In the long run, even persecution is useful for the Church. The Bible teaches that we should be subject to the authorities and only disobey if God’s Word would be violated if we follow the State’s demands.

2 Cor. 6:14-18 - How are our ways and goals different from those of unbelievers? Why
can’t we go the same way with them, have the same thoughts, do the same acts and
deeds? The Apostle Paul instructs us in this passage not to be yoked together with
unbelievers. He asks 5 questions as to whether or not the community of believers and
unbelievers is possible. And he shows that we have nothing to do with them because:
1. We are the people of the Holy God - v. 16b;
2. We have been saved by God - v. 17;
3. We are children of God - v. 18.
